Composer Portrait: Jessie Montgomery
The music of composer Jessie Montgomery is “turbulent, wildly colorful, and exploding with life” (The Washington Post), and is performed regularly by leading orchestras and ensembles around the globe. Winner of the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Classical Composition and Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year, the Juilliard-trained violinist is immersed in a diverse range of projects, including The Everything Band—a collective of artists of varying styles creating music by experimentation, improvisation, and open-ended form. Montgomery performs alongside the ensemble for this Portrait, featuring a newly commissioned work and the hauntingly beautiful Source Code for string quartet. Jerome performs in Jessie Montgomery’s Everything Band Ensemble.

Jazztet Tribute at William Paterson University
On Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 3 PM, a sextet led by tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon will present a tribute to the Jazztet, one of the premier ensembles to emerge during the hard bop period of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Weldon’s all star band will include trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, trombonist Peter Lin, pianist George Cables, bassist Mike Karn and drummer Jerome Jennings. The leader will be interviewed at the “Sittin’ in Meet the Artist” session prior to the concert (2 PM).

Jerome will open the event by premiering an original arrangement of James Weldon and Rosamond Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing” for vocals, Brass ensemble and percussion.

Jerome will infectiously groove a new project entitled Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, drawing on New Orleans music and the groove-filled re-imaginings of originals and standards by the late, great organist Jimmy Smith.

At 94, James “Dub” Hudson continues to inspire as one of Atlanta’s most accomplished and celebrated musicians. A career that began as a reeds player in the U.S. 8th Army Band during the Korean War has since spanned seven decades of remarkable artistry. From recording with legends like André 3000 to leading as alto saxophonist and clarinetist for the Afro-American Philharmonic Orchestra and Jazz Orchestra Atlanta, Hudson has left an indelible mark on jazz. Hosted by Deborah Grace Winer, this Songbook Sundays event features Broadway Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba and Margo Seibert on vocals, backed by an all-star jazz ensemble led by Ted Rosenthal. For 40 years, Urban Bush Women has captivated audiences with performances that fuse dance, music, and theater to amplify Black, women-centered voices and spark social change.
This season, as part of the Harkness Dance Center’s 90th anniversary, co-artistic directors Chanon Judson and Mame Diarra Speis have curated two unique evenings for 92NY, featuring solos, duets, and a quartet with special guest collaborators, along with video created by Nick Hussoung and animation by Ausar Judson. Select works will include live music from exceptional guest artists like Grace Galu Kalambay, Lucianna Padmore, Manchild Black, Jerome Jennings, and more.
